Dear PCSA Members:
The Southern California Chapter is excited to welcome you to the 91st Annual Meeting of the Pacific Coast Surgical Association, February 14-17, 2020 at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California. All aspects of the meeting are shaping up to be great!
The Omni La Costa Resort and Spa is located in the coastal city of Carlsbad in North San Diego County. It is a very well known resort. Most people don’t know it has ties to the mob and Hollywood. Dating back to the 60s and 70s, it was not unusual to see Johnny Carson playing tennis on the resort’s courts, or Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Bob Hope playing rounds of golf. The La Costa went on to attract golf celebrities like Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus in addition to political figures like Jackie Kennedy and Richard Nixon. The hotel became known as a lavish getaway for the rich and famous and the infamous. In 1975, published an article about two of the resort’s founders, Merv Adelson and Irwin Molasky and their connections to organized crime.
The days of the Rat Pack and the Mafioso are long gone at the resort, but the folklore about old Hollywood stars and gangsters still give the lush 400-acre resort some of its unique charm.
Our Program Committee, under the leadership of Christian de Virgilio, has put together a set of outstanding scientific sessions, selecting from the many excellent abstracts contributed by all of you. You can count on cutting edge plenary and mini-podium presentations covering important topics in general surgery and related disciplines. The theme of the Presidential Panel will be “Innovation and the Future of Technology in Medicine and Surgery” with a special surprise guest from Apple Health and great speakers. Gretchen Purcell Jackson, M.D., Ph.D., will share her research in biomedical informatics, and Bruce Gewertz, M.D., will discuss the question: “Is Academic Medicine Capable of Innovation”.
Also, we know that everyone is eagerly anticipating Historian Ryan and Wen Shen’s two part presentation “William Stewart Halstead: Man, Myth and Marriage”.
Women in Surgery…
A Women in Surgery Forum that we hope will become a new PCSA tradition! Farin Amersi, M.D. and Kristine Calhoun, M.D. are working with the members to prepare an excellent program.
The President’s Dinner…
In keeping with the resort’s history and location, the theme will be Mobster/Rat Pack attire. We encourage everyone to wear a costume, if not, come as you are. Please attend, enjoy and dance to a wonderful live band.
Away from the meeting rooms…
Members can hit the fabulous links and courts for golf and tennis and join in our tournaments, in the great PCSA tradition. We will also have a Fun Run this year through the golf courses, as well as the option to play 9-holes of golf in addition to the 18-holes with friends and family.
The hotel also offers a wide range of family activities and many nearby attractions including Legoland, Sea World, San Diego Zoo, USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum, San Diego Safari Park, the Birch Aquarium at Scripps and much more!
Meeting dress code…
To ensure that everyone is as comfortable as can be, and in keeping with the relaxed ambience of the Southern California Coast, casual resort wear will be encouraged at scientific sessions and evening events. While ties are not expressly forbidden, neither members, presenters nor guests should feel that they are expected.
Childcare Services During President’s Dinner…
